Youtube; Splice it, with TubeChop.

TubeChop is a way to take a any youtube and chop it down to only the parts you really want to use and then share it on the web.

This free software was shown to me by on of my Graduate students and I was glad he did.

In less then five minutes, I went to the full length youtube "teachersfortomorrow.net.mov" that was 7.22 minutes and spliced it down to 27 seconds and embedded them both here. That is powerful and a useful tool. Keep it in mind next time you want to show a "shortened" version of youtube.

Thanks for sharing this, Garth. I can use this in my "iambic pentameter and popular music" lesson to embed the (iambic) excerpts of YouTube songs in my presentation.

I wonder if you learned about TubeChop from the blog post I wrote about Web 2.0 tools! I used TubeChop to shorten a video that I wanted to use for my lesson plan and embed in my wiki. I found a video about a survivor of a church bombing in 1963, but there were some scenes at the beginning of the aftermath that I felt were inappropriate for younger students. I "chopped" the video to take out this part. The only thing I don't like about TubeChop is that every time you adjust the length of the "chop" it just plays from the beginning. You can't just put the cursor in the middle of the "chop" and it plays from there. Overall, though, it's a great tool to help shorten YouTube videos!

Nick N, thank Nick Martin. He is right it was in his blog and wikispace where I saw TubeChop.

Nick M, I noticed the same problem when I used it you mentioned, but that is a problem I can deal with as I don't know of another way to easily chop a youtube. Thanks for the comments guys. Come back often.

This is a fantastic tool to use in the classroom. I have had professors and teachers show clips of a YouTube video in class but have take time to search for the exact part of the clip they wanted to show. This can help eliminate using class time searching for exactly the right spot in the video you want to show.
