Change
That is it. No fancy metaphors or allegory. No deep philosophical thoughts or jaded feelings. The last year has been about dealing with change. Not just external change that sprung fourth encapsulated only by the January beginning and December closing of 2013, but internal change sparked by multiple years worth of externally-provoked changes. I remain imperfect, but tirelessly trying to promote and sustain the greatest amount of positive change possible in education. I remain emotional, trying to deal with school violence, kids that are left behind on the Race-to-the-Top. I remain tired, stretching what I can do and who I can do it for to support teachers and students as they press to enact change. I remain grateful, as I am ever-cognizant of the little moments that make the biggest difference for those I serve.
As a historian, I am always fascinated by the amount of history that has been created in recent years. As a teacher, I am constantly challenged to place that history into context. As a rebel, I am constantly pursuing new ways to use that history to change the future.
