Students as Rock Stars.... Thanks Historyteachers

Mike and I have done several posts on Amy Burvall and her successful history content music videos on youtube and facebook. No doubt she has inspired thousands of students around the world to learn and better understand history--not to mention the adults. This year was the second year students have created History music videos for my class, as a project option. These students are 12-13 years old and completed these projects on their own time. I have put in a few examples of their work. I think you will agree that these young adults will never forget these projects or the fun they had making them, not to mention the content that will forever be stuck in their minds. Please leave a comment on what you think about these student created projects, that will leave a legacy for others in the years to come.

On a side note, I have written permission from parents to post all these videos.

They did a very good job!
I wish all kids had the opportunity to do music videos on topics they study in school. It is both creative, fun and educational.

It would be interesting to know how many of your students selected this option for their projects (to create music videos), and what were the other options they could choose?

Callen, I am sure Amy will see this. Maybe she will start making American History videos. She lives in Hawaii, but I will pass your message along.

I had about 10 groups of kids make these (35-40 total kids involved). However, I do not have permission to post them yet. Other students did MindCraft (see this post for preview of final project: http://www.teachersfortomorrow.net/1/post/2012/03/minecraft-gaming-in-middle-school.html ), prezi, stykz, xtranormal, goanimate, websites, and a few powerpoint. I will be posting a great MindCraft later this week, but it is 18 minutes on a green screen. Cool stuff. And at least one Stykz example, as well this week.

Good Post... Garth!

I'm a fan of the HistoryTeacherz (as their webpage is called).

Glad to see your students were inspired, too. I hope they learned about doing historical R&D, about video making and editing videos, and about doing group work. (Probably the most important bit.)

Maybe we'll see more next year! I hope you curate this work so that:

1) Next year's students have a bar they must reach or beat.
2) Some 10 or 20 years from now, the students can come see what they did back then.
3) You can, hopefully via a Youtube page, do like Amy & Herb, and inspire people globally.

ushistorysage, I have some bad news, I don't give them a rubric. It is a Dan Pink, idea. No carrots, no sticks, just make something to teach others. They produce these without a rubrics and that to me is the best part. I guess I should also add they earn 10 points for turning a project in. So as far as points go, that is not much. They do it because they love it, or as Pink would say, they have passion.

I am a middle school social studies teacher and want to do projects like this with my students. I am wondering how long it took you guys to do this project.

These videos are really neat. I can tell the students really enjoyed doing them. I know that after this class I will continue to try and fill my brain with how to implement lots of technology in my classroom and being a english teacher I believe this will be a great idea for a project if the kids like it too and I can figure out how to do it.

As a school teacher can i know how many days it will take to complete this project for a group.
