Mosaickr.com: How can I use that in the classroom?

Mosaickr.com is a mosaic maker. You use flickr photos to create mosaics. I plan to use this site this year for open house. On the first day of school, I will take photos of each student and upload them to my class flickr page. Then each day I will snap a few more photos of students working, so that by open house I have a few hundred images. Then I plan to use our school logo to create a mosaic for my door.

The examples below are from the Mosaickr.com site. You will need to have a flickr account, but you do not need a lot of photos uploaded. You can create these mosaics using open source images others have taken right on flickr (Cleveland, Ohio has over 600,000 images). You can get the Small mosaic for free and it downloads directly to your computer. You can also pay a fee and get much larger images. The downloads are fine for most application in school.

Classroom Ideas:
1. Historical figures with images from their life or geography mosaics
2. LA: What book are you reading? Images of that subject
3. Science: Ocean Theme, Weather, Animals, and more
4. Math: Great architecture of skyscrapers or buildings (even my hometown of 45,000 has 29 images of buildings, Newark Ohio )
5. Art: Famous Artist with their work
6. What would you add?

Will use this for a to kill a mockingbird project. Can use all the different book covers and other appropriate pictures

I think that this is a pretty neat idea. I think that if you can see each picture, it would also trigger a learners memory of what they actually did in such an event. I also think that the one of the most important things about something like this in teaching, is that you are constantly trying to incorporate new ideas in a classroom in order to keep the students stimulated. Good job.

Mosaickr would be helpful in science classrooms for teaching the concept of scale. I thought it also might help students wrap their heads around the 100s of thousands or millions of people killed in some of the conflicts in history. I saw there was a 500 image limit though; one picture could represent multiple people. Students could search for images and compile them for a unit theme mosaic. It would be nice if you could zoom in and out too.

This is pretty amazing, because I have a military photo like this and always wondered how they did it. I def could use this in the classroom as an history teacher. I could use it for a certain country and place famous people, land marks, and ect to create the country.

This is so great! When these first came out as art I thought they were so interesting. I love that I can do them for my class! Super cute way to decorate the classroom...I can even have my students make them for the room!

This is a really neat idea. Seems like it would be super useful to incorporate into an art class, but I think there is a use for it for other classes as well. For instance, maybe in a language arts class, a mosaic could be created of all the covers of the books read during the course. Or maybe one could be created out of illustrations by students. Very nice.

I just learned about this resource and can see myself using it while student teaching in the fall. I will be student teaching a 7th grade world cultures class, and I can use Mosaickr to teach about multiculturalism. Exciting!

Again, this is a beautiful ideal. I would encourage my students to make something special to them using pictures that were found during their research. For example, a student who had to research African American history. I could only imagine some of the photos that could then be put into and found in one of the mosiac pictures. I love the ideal.
