Today during work I decided to show my students some movies made by previous students about the black death. As I always do, I tweeted about it. I sent a link to the video and didn't give it a second thought. Before long, I realized I had received a tweet from Texas. It said, "3rdgrade inspired by @GarthHolman videos, ready to make videos #moviemakers @sewilkie pic.twitter.com/dQ1x4pH19K" To me that is what the web, technology, and 21st century education is all about. Creating things that engage others and allow students to have a real window to the world.
The music video they are watching is a parody of "Call Me Maybe" (on the Black Death.) The image tweeted to me from their classroom and the video, is below. How powerful is that for an authentic audience, ownership and intrinsic motivation? Thanks Twitter and my new friends from Texas for helping me see the power of connected education.
Have to give a shout out to @amyburvall whose music parody's on youtube inspired my students to begin to publish their parodies for others to learn from.
