![]() Today Garth and I discuss how to get teachers more involved with technology. We look at the idea of getting teachers to use tech in their personal lives and then transfer that usage/knowledge to the classroom. We both agree that smart phones seem to be the way everything is going. Both Garth's wife and my wife recently upgraded to smartphones and we both noticed an instant attachment to the technology. My wife started a Facebook account, Garth's wife will hopefully answer email more quickly and all of us see how having technology changes how you interact with the world. I agree that teachers need to use technology in their personal lives if they are going to use it in the classroom. Teachers cannot have a technology-free life and expect to effectively use technology in the classroom. There needs to be a meeting of these two sides.

I really like the idea of using smart phones in the new advances of technology. Soon in the future we will become more and more advanced with technology. Students may know more about computers and are computer literate. I hope that I will integrate the use of technology in my future classrooms.

I also think it is important for teacher to use technology in their personal lives. It's important for teachers to be familiar with the various forms of technology and then using those in their classroom. Our students are so familiar with technology and we need to be using technology that is revelant to them.

With the advancement of technology into the classrooms, and into our pockets, through cell phones and smart phones, we as teachers need to be proactive in protecting ourselves. With a smart phone in your pocket, will you think about the security of student grades that could be accessed on your phone if you lost it, texting with students and the repercussions, and using personal applications like Facebook and Twitter during work hours. If your principal sees a Facebook update while you're supposed to be teaching, there's ramifications of that. Teachers need to REALLY THINK about what they are doing with the powerful technology in their pockets - morally, ethically, personally, professionally, and legally.

I agree that the more familiarity teachers have with technology the better able they will be able to instruct their students in appropriate use. Smart phones always seem to be coming out with new and exciting updates. However, we must keep in mind what we really want our students to get from technology, is it a Facebook account and the ability to always be connected and checking for texts and emails? We need to make sure we are modeling appropriate and responsible use.

Technology is never going away, and teachers need to realize this! It is important to incorporate this idea in to the classroom. With so many different things a teacher can do, why not? I do agree with Kristen above- we need to model appropriate use. I know that Smart phones are continually getting smarter and more advanced, but I do not know if I want to use those in my classroom.

When I was a teenager, learning about new technology came easy for me. However, as I've gotten older, technology seems to have left me in the dust. As a future teacher, I realize that I must catch up and get on board with technology. By education myself technologically, I will be able to better connect with students.
