21st Century Skills

I have been looking for several years for a way to better communicate with parents and students.  I came across Class-Pariot, a free texting based software.   It allows anyone (students and parents) to send one text message to a number with a subscribe message.  Then you can send one text and everyone who signed up will get it.  As the educator, you can choose to turn off responses or allow anyone who gets it to text you back.  I am using it now without students/parents having the ability to response to me.

I think this has huge implications for education.  Parents often don't have time to read the classroom blog, or school newsletters, etc.  This can provide them with details right on their personal handheld.  Let us know your thought.

Hi,

I was just wondering how long you have been using class-parrot as a method of communication? How successful do you think that it is in increasing awareness about school events, etc. ?

Texting is a valid, effective method of communication. Of course, etiquette is very important. Content contained within must be appropriate in this context. Being able to send a message to the masses quickly is great, and I intend to subscribe to this service to aid in this effort. It is also great to be able to convey and express without students being able to respond and contact you directly. Some may have reservations about texting students, but with this service, communication can be simple.

Class-Pariot is the way to go for sending last minute assignments and important information to your students by way of cellphone texting. This is good for sending letter grades or other value information to parents concerning their children. this will avoid notes and messages not being received by the parent or gaurdian.

This is a great idea!! I loved the comment about being able to send important assignment information to students. Also, its a nice reminder to parents about any particular issues that may need addressing. I plan on tinkering around this program to gain a better understanding of how it functions. This is a great find and thanks for posting this!

This is a great idea seeing that more and more people are moving away from landlines and only using cellphones this will allow you to communicate instantaneously with those parents actively involved in their students education.

I like this. I think class parrot is a great tool for communication with parents and students and could even be used between teachers. I do agree with Julie though, if using this, you have to rememeber to use proper etiquette. I think sometimes when texting people forget to do this.
