Word Clouds: Even more visual fun!

Garth shot me a link to this site this morning, and we were both so blown away by how cool it is, I just had to link it here. Tagxedo is a word cloud generator that lets you copy/paste text, use url's, your twitter stream and more to create word clouds. Why is this site more grawsome than Wordle? At Tagxedo, you can easily change every characteristic possible: eliminate common words, change orientation, change colors AND you can have your word cloud appear in shapes. The picture below is an example of a word cloud I created by entering the url to this blog. Because its about education, I went with the cliche "apple" shape. In the beta version, you can even upload your own images to use!! Check this site out and think about ways to engage students with your curiculum!

I liked this better than Wordle too, I think I will put this in my lesson plan instead. Could not ge the background image to print, but still looks like a heart!

Yet another fun, exciting way to incorporate word clouds into a lesson. Tagxedo opens the door to create even a better visual of the presented information for the students to learn and enjoy.

Fantastic. Another wonderful tool for students to use to be creative and get excited while learning. Another great resource for teachers that provides readily avaialbe tools for easy access.

I really like the idea of incorporating your student's photos and words into the visual arts in a classroom. I think having class specific motivational posters will encourage the students to actually look at them. There are so many different options! The word clouds were my favorite...I think there are tons of options for Language Arts with these!

I love this! I have a friend who uses Wordle all the time in her lesson plans, but I think these word clouds blow it away!

This is a really cool idea. It is a good way to help students become more creative and show what they are doing in the classroom at the same time.

I absolutely love word clouds. i believe they are great for all learners and can be used in many different activities. I recently created one for one of my classess to help depict a picture of a Spanish dictator in the 1800's, it really did a great job. Thanks Garth for showing this!!

I find both Wordle and Tagxedo's capabilities amazing! These tools are great ways to find out what students prior knowledge is on a topic before learning about it. However, the same can be used to end a unit by having the students write what they learned. I bet that the second Wordle would be bigger and probably have several large words popping out. Tagxedo's ability to scroll over a word and it pops out away from the image it neat so that as you teach, an emphasis can be made on that word.

Tagxedo is fun and addictive. Students and teachers can use this in the classroom and beyond. It is easy to use and allows you to creative eye-popping word art for the school to see. I am sure it will be improved as time goes on.

I love Word Clouds and cannot wait to use them in the future. What a great visual that takes so little time to create! This is a great tool for the student and teacher and one of my favorite things I learned about this semester! What a cool way to introduce, review, and reinforce concepts.

Word clouds are an amazing visual tool. I have come to really appreciate visual learning in order to accommodate all of my students. A way that this could be used in the classroom is to have students brainstorm words or ideas of a text and create word clouds to pull out the main theme. Students can compare their main themes and chances are, you will see some similarities among students. My favorite visual word cloud application is Wordle. However, I would love to try Tagxedo!
