21st Century Skills

About 5 minutes ago I Skyped Garth during a workshop...I should note he is sitting right next to me.  As we were talking about ways to use Skype and GoggleVoice together, I discovered a button that has been sitting right in front of me that I had never "clicked"; but I finally did click-it and it opens a whole new, dynamic way to use Skype.

When you are in a Skype call, there is a button labeled "share".  By clicking this button you can send a live image of your desktop, or a portion of your desktop, to the person with which you are conversing.  This allows you to share anything that may be open on your screen: show cool websites, share documents, give a tutorial to someone, share digital photos, etc.

Garth and I are currently sitting here discussing/playing with this new feature in Skype.  We are thinking that this may bypass the need for GoogleDocs, since you can talk to someone and have one person do the typing.  In my building I have several students who use Skype to talk to family members around the world, now they can share digital pictures of events in their lives without the need to email or file share in other formats.  This is very exciting stuff.  If you have used this feature, please leave us a comment on how we may incorporate this in our classrooms.

Hi Garth - really interesting content on your blog.Do I need to signup for something to be part of this? I am communicating with a gal in Mexico who is learning about my reading product to sell. The Skype button will be great during training sessions. Thanks. Please go to the website above and check out the 21st CSA for both students and teachers. Tell me what you think? Thanks, Ruth

Very interesting application. I will have to check that out. It has implications for many areas of sharing.

I am just getting comfortable with skype. I've only used it a few times. It is amazing to me that you can acctully see the person on the other end and what makes it even better is that it is a free service. I'll be sure to play with the "screen sharing" feature next time I skype, it sounds like a great tool that can be used in many different ways.

I think i am going to love skype! Its opening up the whole world and its going to bring it to my classroom! (i hope anyway) I am glad i have gotten exposure to it now so i have time to learn more about it before school starts. it seems to be a little overwhelming at first.

I love using skype to stay connected with friends and family. However, I never knew about the screen sharing! I think that would be great for doing group projects and other things as well. I hope to use this next time I am doing a project in this cohort!

LOVE this concept!! I was using the screen sharing on skype this weekend and I was able to help my friend find something on her screen she didn't even know was there! What an incredible resource for teachers helping each other! Thanks for sharing this great resource with us!!

Yesterday in class I was able to see how easy it is to use screen sharing on skpe. I think that skpe is an incredible resource that can be used in the classroom and screen sharing just adds to it. This application allows teachers and students to “share” information in a whole new way in addition to limiting confusion because we can provide a visual as to what we want others to see or what we may explain. I will definitely incorporate this into the classroom!

This was one of the easiest things to set up! I love it is free and enjoyed talking to quite a few people already. I will look forward to finding some opportunities in my classroom to use Skype!
