21st Century Skills

Word clouds can be cool for kids.  They open their eyes to new terms, ideas and ways to think.  I have been using wordle.net in my room to make word clouds at the end of each unit for over a year.  I ask students to list five words (in a google doc form) that they would have to explain to a person on the street if they were going to explain what they had learned.  The images create lively discussions, heated debate, and reflection on what they had learned.  Wordle can even be used for an evaluation tool.  The real great part of wordle.net, well two great things: it’s free and fast (one minute or less to make a word cloud) and it will wordle text that is copied in for any source.  What a great way to pull out main ideas from text as a pre-reading activity for your classroom.

The examples below are student created with about 110 kids responding.   The bigger the word the more often it was cited as an important idea, concept or term.  The smaller the less frequently it came up…main ideas, sub-ideas.  Great stuff for an engaging classroom.  Give it a try and let me know what you think and how you used it in your class.

I enjoyed reading your Blog.
I absolutely LOVED the Wordle sight!!! I went in and played around with it, very fun. I can see using that in my life planning class. I would have them have the word GOAL really big, then have the most important goals down to the least important in different sizes to show greatest to least importance. I could also use this for Values, Wants, and Needs!! Very fun. They get tired of this topic at times and this would put a new spin on it!! Thanks for the great idea!!
I also liked the comment from the woman who said, “if you don’t ask you never know what you can get!” I have also found this to be so true. Sometimes there is extra money that needs to be spent and you might be asking at the right time!!

I loved the ideas you had for using the wordle site. It seems that it would be great in assessing if students are getting the main ideas (as the bigger words indicate higher number of responses). Thanks!

This is something I would definitely use in my classroom. I think this is something that would be appropriate for any age, any subject. It's creative, colorful, different. This is a great way for students to become more engaged in the topic/subject jargon.

I absolutely LOVED playing around with wordle.net!!! I also never heard of this site, but found myself playing around with it for quite a while. What a great way to combine specific content-driven terminology and language arts right in my music classroom! I really think my students will enjoy this added to the classroom. And we get to work with computers, which is something they have been begging to do. Thanks for the new resource!!

I love the idea of using word clouds. In my classroom I teach kindergarten and every day we make a chart about what we learned. I think if I can I would like to do this idea with them! I would also have the kids type out their sight words of the week. I look forward to using this in my classroom.

I actually found Wordle on the Delicious sight and thought it was a great tool to use in the classroom. The possibilities are endless as to how you can utilize it in the classroom. I teach reading at the middle school level and am very excited to take this new tool into my classroom and work with my students with Wordle. Summarizing main points in books, main characters, plot, theme... the possibilities can keep on going!

Really amazing tool that puts ownership into each and every student input within a lesson. Very useful within the classroom or for presentations.

I really liked the word clouds concept as a way to get students interested for a upcoming lesson. This is a great tool to get students motivated at the beginning of teaching a lesson. I could use this tool as an introductory lesson when teaching a lesson in health class that I might teach in the future.

I like how Wordle can be used for an evaluation tool. This tool is free and fast which is a very important aspect of the site because time and money are important issues to keep in consideration when teaching. It is a great way to pull out main ideas from text and use it as a formative assessment for students. Moreover, it is visually fun and colorful which would engage me and my attention if my teachers used this in high school.

Wordle seems like a great tool to know about not only because of the varies ways it can be used, but also because of the various age groups and subject areas that it can be used in. Anything visually appealing will will help engage students right from the beginning of the class.

I really like using word clouds. My favorite thing to do is input other bodies of text like news articles or political speeches.
