21st Century Skills

The Partnership for 21st Century skills outlines what it believes to be 21st Century skills today's schools need to be teaching. Ohio became part of this partnership in 2009.  The partnership talks about the traditional three R’s and the four C’s. The four C’s include the following:
1.     Critical thinking and problem solving
2.     Communication,
3.     Collaboration
4.     Creativity and innovation

I would like to address the collaboration idea in this post.  For the last three weeks my students have been learning about the middle ages.  They learned the basics from a webquest, while viewing their learning from the perspective of one member of the social hierarchy during the middle ages.  While this webquest allowed student to explore different parts to the middle ages they did not have a great way to share what they were learning.  I wanted them to blog, but blogs were not “opened” for the students on our network.  So, I thought about what I could use.  I have used google docs for online testing (Read Mike’s Post on google doc testing), surveys and collaboration with other teachers, so I created workspaces for each group in the social hierarchy.  Students were able to share what they had learned with the kings, nobles, knights, clergy, or peasants from other classes in the middle school. Students had found had ideas, facts, stories that no one else had found and   with google docs collaboration with ever seventh grader in the school was possible and LIVE.  The images below give you an idea of what the final product looked like.  I did print out the documents and ended up with 51 pages of information.  I must say, almost all of it was good information…only one OMG, not bad for 109 12 year olds.

Let my students tell you what they thought.   These are comments from their journals:
Connor:  I liked google docs because I got to learn new things and I was able to respond to questions my self or add on to other comments. The thing about google docs is you can openly discuss what interesting facts you know and its is very close to a silent classroom with no side conversations.  I liked how in google docs you could see what other people have written and branch off from that as opposed to a classroom where you could forget what that person said or what you were about to say.

Nadeera: Yes I did like the Google Docs because it was sort of like blogging. We got to type about how we felt as a certain persons perspective. It was fun to me and I learned a lot.

Caroline: Yes, I enjoyed the program because it gave us a chance to understand what other kids think about the same situation. It gave me new ideas and view points on the same topic and so many different thoughts about things I didn’t even learn yet. I learned the opinions of other kids and new view points on different topics.

Orit: I liked working with google docs because a lot of people write what they know and then they can share it with others. From Google docs you can share ideas and stories that people didn’t know before and new things. In the middle ages I learned about a lot about knights, like what is a page and what is a squire. The middle ages was very interesting to learn about. I think that Google docs helped me to learn lots of different things.

Kate: I liked google docs. I thought it was so cool how we could share thoughts without even talking to one another or seeing each other during the day, it helped share Ideas if one person found an interesting fact but no one else did they could share that easily. I also found myself going on google docs once or twice at home and checking to see what others had added. You could use google docs for pretty much anything if you were doing, a project it would be great. I hope we do another project where we use google docs, I liked how you could correct someone else too.  I learned that priests helped out with medicine and I did not know that before, I also learned what they ate if they lived on a manor instead of a castle.

Kids enjoyed the process, they learned from others and they “went home and looked”.  Those are good things.  By using google doc workspaces for students we create a free open place for them to learn a 21st century skill: collaboration.

A few questions to think about:

1.  How could you use this in your classroom?

2.  How does this type of collaboration change teaching and learning?

I really like the idea of using collaboration in this way. I was especially interested in the comment by the student about seeing what others were writing so they could comment. They didn't have to worry about forgetting what someone what else said. Also, the way that Googledocs allowed you to see which students made which comments allowed you to see what individual students contribute. Great tool.

What a great workaround for districts that block popular blogging/social media sites. This type of learning really prepares the next generation for jobs that await.

What a great learning tool for your students. From there comments, it is evident that they acquired learning in various areas. They not only learned in the area of technology and using a new channel, but they were able to learn new information from other students like them. Google docs is something they will use later on in life, and the knowledge they acquired through this activity will, in the long run, most likely benefit them more than just using a blog.

I really liked how students were able to collaborate and communicate through the use of the Google doc with their assignment. My students are currently working on habitat projects in science. I share them and allow my students to present them in our online classroom. When they see and hear about their classmates ideas, it really opens their eyes to the options they have with creativity. This type of a Google doc would be perfect to use for the planning stage of my student's habitat project. Not only would they be able to communicate and collaborate together what they have learned about different habitats, but they would also have the opportunity to build from other student's creativity and styles.

I really like the collaboration and that you are encouraging them to use other technology (texting) to share ideas and learn from each other. It also seems from the student comments that they are positive and excited about learning. They also seem very open minded and I think that is great. My son is in 7th grade and would love to be doing this in his classes!

I liked the idea of google docs as it allows the student to learn in quick time. The student is able to get feedback immediately from their peers and learn from one another.

I am a social studies teacher and have never used google docs, but I really like the interaction and collaboration that the google docs create and think that it can be incorporated pretty easily into a lot of the lessons that I teach.

I really liked what Connor said, that you can respond to someone's question or comment without forgetting what their question was, because it is written down. This provides each student time to think, on their own, about the questions or comments and gives them a chance to respond, where in a typical classroom setting many students don't respond due to shyness, or not having enough time to think about and then respond before the teacher moves on or someone else answers. Googledocs is a great way to get more engagement from students. It is also a great feedback tool. A teacher can get a good idea of what and how the student is thinking about the topic, and then make any necessary corrections. I definitely plan on using this within my classroom, provided that we have the necessary tools; i.e. computers.

I am learning a great deal about the various ways that Google Docs can be utilized in the classroom. I can see what a great advantage it can be to both teachers and students. It is encouraging to see all of the positive comments and insights that the students shared.

This could be used in so many ways! One way would be to have a homework help sheet, where students could ask questions and receive assistance from other students. I know one teacher who asked students to watch a film and then asked them to write their response on Google Docs. The students really enjoyed reading one another's responses.
I also think this is a great way to teach students "netiquette!"

I really like this idea of use in the classroom because everyone gets the chance to participate. Many times in the classroom only a few students get the chance to share their ideas. Some students even sit back and allow other students to do their thinking for them. This method of learning for students allows engagement and participation from all members of the classroom.

I love Google Docs! Who knew it was right there where I check my email everyday!?!? Not me! What a fun and interesting way to get students on the computer! And the fact that it is free and EASY makes it so much more worthwhile! I really like the way you can create quizzes! Thanks for yet another great use of technology that is so simple, anyone can use it and be successful!

I like the idea of the students being able to see questions and have time to think them through from different perspectives they have thought about. It is better than hearing a question and starting to think about it and then losing your train of thought because you forgot exactly what the question was. It also allows students to learn in a more interactive way, making it more meaningful to them.

This is a really great little video about collaborating in Google docs. I use the chat feature when I'm showing Powerpoint presentations through Google docs. Then, my students who are shy about asking questions, or who are lost, can ask while we're in the presentation. They can also ask for clarification, and other students can help respond to their peers. Students can look for examples online and post them, and it really helps students who are already on their laptops to get involved in the class!

I had never thought about the ways I could utilize Google Docs in the classroom before, but, wow, are there a lot of ways. And they are innovative, effective, and really appeal to students it seems. I am excited to carry this into my classroom in the fall. Thanks!
